Rock Hill, SC - Winthrop junior point guard De'Andre Adams died Wednesday in the Atlanta Medical Center from head injuries sustained Saturday in a one-car accident near his home in Austell, Georgia.
Adams swerved to avoid hitting a fallen tree on the road when the car flipped and rolled before crashing into another tree off the road. He was returning home after participating in a pick-up game at the Run-And-Shoot.
'He had a vibrant personality and he lived his life with great passion and enthusiasm,' Winthrop coach Randy Peele said. 'We will miss De'Andre a great deal.'
A key player off the Winthrop bench, Adams helped the Eagles to two Big South Conference titles and two trips to the NCAA Championship Tournament. Playing in all 65 Winthrop games over the past two seasons, he averaged 2.1 points and 2.8 assists last year.
