DePaul's Wainwright tabbed to guide U19 team
May 8, 2007, 17:40 GMT
Colorado Springs, CO - DePaul men's basketball coach Jerry Wainwright has been selected to guide the United States' entry to this summer's FIBA U19 World Championship.
The 2007 U19 tournament will be held from July 12-22 in Serbia. The team will consist of players 19 years old and younger.
Wainwright was an assistant coach of the U18 team last summer.
'It's a natural progression for Jerry,' said Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim, who chairs the USA Basketball Men's Collegiate Committee. 'He was an assistant last summer for our very successful U18 team. Some of the players will return and are familiar with him.'
Wainwright has been the head coach at DePaul for the past two seasons, and has also spent time at Richmond and North Carolina-Wilmington during his 13 years as collegiate head coach.
'It's a great honor,' said Wainwright, who owns a career coaching record of 369-306. 'I've been privileged to work with two other programs in USA Basketball. It's an incredible privilege to wear your country's name on a uniform and represent it.'
Drexel's Bruiser Flint and George Washington's Karl Hobbs will serve as Wainwright's assistants.
