Wichita, KS - Wichita State announced on Saturday that Gregg Marshall has been named the 25th head men's basketball coach.
Marshall spent the last nine years as head coach at Winthrop, helping the Eagles to their third-straight Big South Conference championship and first win in the NCAA tournament.
'We talked earlier this week that Shocker basketball is a great story, a great year with great players, and just a great tradition,' WSU director of athletics Jim Schaus said. 'Many wonderful chapters have been written and now it is time to write a new chapter with a new author. I could not be happier and more excited to announce today to you our new head mens basketball coach Gregg Marshall from Winthrop University.'
Winthrop finished with a 29-5 mark and became the first squad in conference history to go undefeated during the regular season. Also, Marshall became the Big South's all-time winningest coach, passing Radford's Ron Bradley (192 wins in 11 years).
Marshall was selected as the 2007 Big South Conference Coach of the year for the fourth time, also garnering the award in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007.
Marshall replaces Mark Turgeon, who spent the past seven seasons at Wichita State, guiding the program to a record of 128-89. The Shockers, after lofty expectations following a run to the Sweet 16 of the 2006 NCAA Tournament, were just 17-14 this past season. They were ranked as high as eighth in the nation in December, but failed to earn a postseason bid thanks to a five-game losing streak to end the season.
