Olean, NY - St. Bonaventure has named Mark Schmidt its new men's basketball coach.
Terms of the deal for the former Robert Morris mentor were not disclosed, but the Buffalo News reported Monday that it was a seven-year deal worth in excess of $2 million.
'We are thrilled to have Mark Schmidt as our new men's basketball coach,' said St. Bonaventure athletic director Steve Watson. 'He is a proven, successful head coach who impressed us with his attitude, desire and passion. His teams at Robert Morris were known for how hard they played as well as how they improved. Mark also has a firm understanding of what it takes to compete and win in the Atlantic 10 Conference. We welcome Mark and his family into the St. Bonaventure family.'
Schmidt compiled an 82-90 record in six years at Robert Morris, but finished 17-11 last season.
Prior to taking over the Robert Morris program, Schmidt served seven seasons at Xavier as an assistant coach under Skip Prosser.
Schmidt will replace Anthony Solomon at St. Bonaventure. Solomon's Bonnies finished last season with an overall record of 7-22 and a 4-12 mark in the Atlantic 10.
Solomon, who was hired in May 2003, compiled a 24-88 record during his tenure at St. Bonaventure.
