College Station, TX - A whirlwind for two weeks that began with a contract extension and included Billy Gillispie's departure to Kentucky has ended with Texas A&M reportedly ready to introduce Wichita State head coach Mark Turgeon as the new face of the Aggies program at a Tuesday press conference.
The Dallas Morning News reported late Monday night that Turgeon will be introduced at an afternoon press conference after spending eight seasons as Shockers head coach, reaching the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 just one year ago.
First, Turgeon will reportedly meet with his players at a Monday night meeting, sources told the Wichita Eagle.
Turgeon brings an extensive resume to College Station as a player, assistant coach and head coach. He is familiar with the conference's roots as a member of Kansas' 1986 Final Four team. He was an assistant coach on Larry Brown's 1988 national championship team and stayed on staff when Roy Williams took over one year later.
The Wichita State coach's hiring caps an interesting two weeks for Texas A&M. Gillispie was officially introduced at Kentucky last Friday, lured by a lucrative contract and the opportunity to take over the storied Wildcats program.
However, just one week prior Gillispie agreed to a new contract with Texas A&M, a package worth $1.75 million through March 2015. Yet, he apparently never signed the deal.
