Long Beach, CA - Long Beach State introduced Dan Monson as its new head men's basketball coach on Saturday.
Monson was in his eighth season at Minnesota, when he resigned this past season following a 2-5 start. The Golden Gophers had a record of 118-106 under Monson, who took over the program in July 1999.
Before taking the Minnesota job, Monson helped build Gonzaga into a national power. He was an assistant coach at the West Coast Conference school from 1988 until taking over the top job in 1997.
The 49ers had been searching for new head coach since announcing on March 20 that Larry Reynolds' contract would not be renewed.
Long Beach State ended the year at 24-8. It was the 49ers' first 20-win season since 1999-00. The 49ers won the Big West title with a 12-2 mark and Reynolds was honored as the conference Coach of the Year.
The 49ers won the Big West Conference Tournament title for the first time since 1995 and with that they earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament before losing to Tennessee in the first round.
