Washington State gives Bennett long-term deal

Pullman, WA - Washington State announced Wednesday it has restructured the contract of men's basketball coach Tony Bennett, with a new seven-year deal keeping him at the school through the 2013-14 season.Bennett completed his first season as Cougars head coach and led the team to a 26-8 record, with the victories tying the most in school history. The Cougars posted their first NCAA Tournament win in 24 years with a first round defeat of Oral Roberts. They then lost to Vanderbilt in the second round.'I want this group of young men and this program to know we do not want to be a flash in the pan,' Bennett said. 'We worked hard for four years to get to where we are. I am so excited to be in Pullman. I love the character of the young men on our team.'Bennett just completed his fourth season with the Cougars, having come to Washington State as an assistant coach for his father Dick prior to the 2003-04 season. The younger Bennett was promoted to associate head coach for the 2004-05 season and replaced his father at the conclusion of the 2005-06 campaign.© 2007 The Sports Network
