Winston-Salem, NC - Roy Hibbert scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and the second-seeded Georgetown Hoyas survived with a 62-55 win over the Boston College Eagles in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Jonathan Wallace scored 15 points, and Jeff Green finished with 11 points and 12 boards for the Hoyas (28-6), who advance to play Vanderbilt in the East regional semifinal next week.
Tyrese Rice scored 22 points for the seventh-seeded Eagles (21-12), who fell in a matchup of former Big East rivals. Jared Dudley scored 19 and grabbed eight rebounds for BC, which left the Big East for the ACC in 2005.
Two Rice free throws pulled the Eagles to within 54-53 with 3:11 left, but a Jessie Sapp steal and layup put the Hoyas up three, and Green followed that with a three-point play to stretch the Georgetown lead to 59-53 with 1:26 to go.
Two more Rice free throws cut the deficit to 59-55, but Patrick Ewing threw down a spinning reverse dunk, drew the foul, and made the free throw to put the Hoyas up 62-55 with 42.4 seconds left. Rice and Dudley both missed threes in the last 40 seconds as the Hoyas held on to advance to the Sweet 16..
Dudley shot the lights out to open the second half, hitting back-to-back jumpers and a layup for good measure that staked BC to a 36-29 lead at the 18:01 mark. The BC lead topped out at 39-31 after a Rice trey, but the Hoyas came roaring back with eight straight, with two Sapp free throws tying the game at 39 with 12:41 left.
The Hoyas played like the higher-seeded team early on, with back-to-back baskets by Sapp staking Georgetown to a 12-2 lead with 16:10 left. BC pulled back in, though, scoring six straight points to cut the lead to 12-8.
The Eagles continued to chip away at the lead, pulling even after Rice followed a jumper with a trey that knotted the game at 19 with 8:16 left. After Hibbert made two free throws, Rice drilled another three to put BC on top, 22-21.
The Eagles led, 30-26, at the half.
