New Orleans, LA - Carl Landry scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Purdue over Arizona, 72-63, in first-round action of the NCAA Tournament.
Chris Kramer and Chris Lutz each added 16 points for the Mid-West Bracket's ninth-seeded Boilermakers (22-11), who will next face top seed and defending national champion Florida in the second round. David Teague had 15 points for Purdue, which has won five of six overall.
Chase Budinger had 15 points and six rebounds to lead the bracket's eighth- seeded Wildcats (20-11), who led only briefly in the first half and never got closer than four points in the second half. Jawann McClellan had 12 points and six boards and Ivan Radenovic registered 12 points and nine boards for Arizona, which was making its 23rd straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
Purdue grabbed a 22-16 lead midway through the first half after Lutz drained a three-pointer. But Arizona answered by scoring nine of the next 11 points to take a slim 25-24 edge with six minutes remaining in the opening half.
The Boilermakers, though, responded by scoring eight straight points to go back into the lead, 32-25.
Purdue ended up taking a 37-34 edge into the break and scored the first eight points of the second half to extend to a 45-34 advantage.
Arizona later drew within 45-41 following a Budinger dunk with 11:59 left, but four points was as close as the Wildcats got the rest of the way.
Game Notes
Arizona head coach Lute Olsen tied Dean Smith for the longest tournament streak of all-time with 23 straight appearances...Purdue now leads the all- time series 6-5...Marcus Williams had 11 points and Mustafa Shakur tallied nine points and eight assists for Arizona.
