Seattle, WA - Jon Brockman scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Washington to a 61-51 upset of second-ranked UCLA at Bank of America Arena.
Spencer Hawes had 13 points and pulled down 15 boards for the Huskies (18-12, 8-10 Pac-10), who were coming off a win over No. 23 Southern California. Ryan Appleby also netted 13 points in the win.
'We knew we were going to need a Herculean effort to come out and be successful against UCLA,' Huskies head coach Lorenzo Romar said. 'I just can't say how proud I am of our guys.'
Washington, which led the entire game, finished 41 percent shooting from the field.
Josh Shipp had 13 points with six rebounds for the Bruins (26-4, 15-3 Pac-10), who had a five-game winning streak snapped. On Thursday, the Bruins defeated No. 13 Washington State to capture its second straight Pac-10 title. Arron Afflalo donated 12 points and Lorenzo Mata poured in 10 with nine boards in defeat.
'We were not patient on offense,' UCLA head coach Ben Howland said. 'They were more patient than we were in their half court offense today. We started off bad with two turnovers and when you're playing a team as good as I think the Huskies are, you have to come out and have good starts.'
Washington made a statement from the start by scoring the game's first nine points.
UCLA then cut within one, 19-18 on Russell Westbrook's layup with 7:31 left, but the Huskies closed out the frame with a 12-2 run -- capped by Quincy Pondexter's lay-in -- for a 31-20 halftime advantage.
In the second, the Huskies continued to dominate and Appleby's three-pointer made it a 48-32 affair with 9:43 remaining.
UCLA, though, didn't give in as Darren Collison's trey ended a 19-4 burst to close within one, 52-51, with 2:57 to play.
However, Hawes hit a layup on the ensuing possession and Washington went a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe to ice the game.
The Bruins shot just 31 percent from the floor in the game.
