Atlanta, GA - Thaddeus Young scored 25 points and was a sizzling 5-of-6 beyond-the-arc as Georgia Tech stunned No. 8 North Carolina, 84-77, at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
Anthony Morrow added 18 points for the Yellow Jackets (19-10, 7-8 ACC), who won for the second time in three games and avenged a 77-61 loss at North Carolina earlier this season. Javaris Crittenton chipped in with 13 points and 11 assists.
Freshman Brandan Wright tallied 22 points for the struggling Tar Heels (24-6, 10-5), who lost for the fourth time in eight games and fell a game behind Virginia in the ACC standings. Tyler Hansbrough netted 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Wayne Ellington finished with 14 points.
Georgia Tech rode an impressive offensive first half to a seven-point lead and continued to pull away from the more talented Tar Heels in the opening moments of the second half.
Morrow connected on a three to give the Yellow Jackets a comfortable 69-56 cushion with 12:26 remaining in the game.
But, North Carolina started to creep back in the game over the next several minutes. Consecutive layups by Ty Lawson and Danny Green drew the Tar Heels within eight, 73-65, with 6:40 left.
The noose continued to tighten around the Yellow Jackets over the next few minutes. Lawson got loose for a breakaway layup off a Hansbrough steal to make it a five-point game, 75-70, with less than five minutes to go.
But, that was the last field goal of the game. With 4:17 on the clock, Crittenton finally stopped the bleeding for Georgia Tech with a pair of free throws.
Both teams then went cold from there and it became a free throw contest down the stretch. Neither club was able to deposit anything from the field in the final four minutes but the Yellow Jackets did enough from the charity stripe to hold on.
The Yellow Jackets broke open a tie game with a 9-0 run midway through the opening frame. Jeremis Smith's lay-in capped the flurry and gave Georgia Tech a 23-14 advantage with just under 11 minutes to go.
Morrow's three, with 3:59 left before intermission, then gave Georgia Tech its largest lead of the half, 44-30.
The Tar Heels recovered a bit from there and closed to within seven, 49-42, heading to the locker room.
