Morgantown, VA - Frank Young scored 18 points, and the 23rd-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers topped Seton Hall, 81-71.
Darris Nichols scored 17 points for West Virginia (20-6, 8-5 Big East), which has won two of three. Joe Alexander and Alex Ruoff contributed 13 points apiece for the Mountaineers. Rob Summer pulled down seven rebounds to go with six points for WVU.
Eugene Harvey led Seton Hall (12-13, 3-9) with 19 points, and Brian Laing scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Paul Gause scored 12 points and raked in 10 rebounds for the Pirates, who have lost four straight and seven of eight. Stan Gaines added 12 points for Seton Hall.
The Mountaineers took control of the game early in the second half, opening with a 9-2 stretch. An Alexander jumper closed the run, posting WVU to a 45-35 lead just over three minutes into the second half.
The Pirates pulled back to within four points, as a Laing three-point play cut the WVU lead to 59-55 with under nine minutes remaining. Jamar Nutter missed a three that would have cut the deficit to one, though, and Nichols drilled a three the next trip down the court, putting the Mountaineers up 62-55.
The Pirates would not go away easily, though, and a Harvey basket and a three- point play by Gaines cut the WVU lead to 62-60 with just over six minutes left. The Mountaineers closed with a 15-2 run, though, powered by Young, who scored nine points during the stretch, including the basket that ended the run, pushing the Mountaineers advantage to 77-62 with under two minutes left.
Seton Hall played WVU tight throughout the first half, and trailed 36-33 at the intermission.
