Greenville, NC - Jeremy Hunt scored 16 points, and the 17th- ranked Memphis Tigers fought through an awful shooting performance to beat East Carolina, 61-44.
Doneal Mack scored 15 for Memphis (15-3, 5-0 Conference USA), which shot 31 percent (17-of-55) from the field. Robert Dozier scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Tigers, who won their seventh straight game. Joey Dorsey grabbed 15 boards, and Antonio Anderson finished with 11 rebounds for the Tigers.
John Fields scored 14 points for East Carolina (5-12, 0-4). No other player scored in double-figures for the Pirates, who lost their fourth in a row, and shot 36 percent from the field (17-of-47). East Carolina has lost 11 of 12 since starting the season 4-1.
East Carolina actually led after a three-pointer by Courtney Captain put the Pirates up 28-24 just under three minutes into the second half. The Memphis offense finally came alive, though, and the Tigers ripped off a 23-4 run, scoring more points on a six-minute stretch than they had in the entire first half.
Jeremy Hunt closed the run with a jumper that put the Tigers up 47-32 with 11:13 left in the game. Memphis coasted to the finish line from there, cruising to a 17-point win.
Memphis started slow offensively, but the Pirates were even worse, and the Tigers took an 11-4 lead after Jeremy Hunt hit a three-pointer with 15:34 left in the first half. Memphis only scored 10 points over the remaining 15 minutes in the first half, though, and a jumper by Fields with one second left in the half tied the game at 21-21.
