Pittsburgh, PA - Aaron Gray scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the second-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers to a 73-56 trouncing of the Duquesne Dukes.
Mike Cook added 11 points and five boards for Pitt (9-0), which dominated in a game that was never in doubt. Sam Young and Tyrell Biggs added 10 points each for the Panthers
Robert Mitchell led all Duquesne (2-5) scorers with 13 points. Stephen Wood added 12 points for the Dukes, who have lost five straight after winning their first two. Scott Grote, Aaron Jackson, and Gary Tucker scored seven points each in the losing effort.
The Panthers dominated from the opening tip, ripping on a 22-5 run in the first ten minutes to quickly put an end to any upset hopes for the Dukes. A Young dunk with just over nine minutes left in the first half opened up a 30-10 lead for the Panthers.
The Dukes were able to slow down the Panthers a bit towards the end of the first half, but still went into the intermission with a 14-points deficit, at 42-28.
It was more of the same in the second half for the Dukes, who trailed the Panthers by double-figures for the rest of the game. Two free throws by Mitchell cut the Pitt lead to 47-37 with 13:45 left, but that was as close as Duquesne would get, and the Panthers cruised to the 17-point victory.
