Durant, Longhorns edge Red Storm

New York, NY - Kevin Durant scored 29 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, as 19th-ranked Texas edged St. John's 77-76, in the consolation game of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.
D.J. Augustin added 17 points and seven assists for the Longhorns (3-1), who also got 12 points from A.J. Abrams.
Avery Patterson scored 22 for the Red Storm (2-2), who gave up 31 points off turnovers. Anthony Mason Jr. had 13 points and Lamont Hamilton scored 11 and yanked down 11 boards.
Augustin's two free throws gave Texas the lead for good at 75-73 with 1:55 remaining. After Patterson missed a three-pointer, the Longhorns were called for a 35-second shot clock violation.
However, Augustin came up with another big play, stealing the ball and going coast-to-coast for a layup for a 77-73 lead with 40.3 seconds left. Augustin missed the ensuing free throw.
The Red Storm got within a point on Eugene Lawrence's three-point play with 16.7 seconds left, and St. John's got the ball back a second later after Justin Mason missed the front-end of a 1-and-1.
St. John's last chance to win the game failed as Anthony Mason Jr. missed a three-pointer from the right wing at the buzzer.
Abrams also had four steals for Texas, which trailed 45-44 at the half.
Daryll Hill scored 10 and had eight assists for St. John's.
Game Notes
This was the second meeting between the schools. The Red Storm registered an 84-76 victory in a NCAA Tournament second round contest in 1991.
Patterson went 6-of-11 from three-point range.
Lawrence had seven assists.
