College Park, MD - Terrapins men's basketball coach Gary Williams has agreed in principle on a two-year extension, director of athletics Deborah Yow announced on Thursday.
'I appreciate the opportunity to be part of the University of Maryland for a long time,' said Williams. 'We've been able to accomplish great things during our time here, and it means a great deal to me that the university has made it possible for us to continue to be committed to helping current and potential student-athletes come to Maryland to grow, learn and excel.'
The new extension will guarantee Williams' current deal through the 2010-2011 season. If additional performance and academic incentives are attained, the new deal may be extended as far as 2014.
In his 18th year at the helm in College Park, Williams, a 1968 Maryland graduate, led the Terrapins to the 2002 national title and the ACC title in 2004.
Last season, he moved into top spot for all-time coaching wins at Maryland, besting the mark previously set by Lefty Driesell. His record with the Terps heading into this season is 355-191. Williams is now third all-time in ACC victories, trailing only Mike Krzyzewski and Dean Smith.
