Philadelphia, PA - After coming up just two points shy of first-place last week, Drake edged past San Diego by one point in the Mid- Major Top-10 poll announced by The Sports Network on Tuesday.
Both teams received eight first-place votes, but Drake was named second on one more ballot than San Diego. San Diego, a 38-17 winner against Marist, had been ranked first in the preseason poll and the first-week poll, with Drake second in both.
Drake built on its season-opening 27-24 upset of Illinois State by pounding Waldorf 45-14. Illinois State had been ranked seventh in The Sports Network FCS Top-25 preseason poll and is still ranked 17th.
Dayton used a 45-7 victory over Urbana to springboard to third. The Flyers had been ranked fifth in the previous poll.
Albany fell one spot to fourth, three points behind Dayton, despite a 23-20 victory against Fordham.
Central Connecticut State beat Merrimack 45-7 and was rewarded by moving up from seventh to fifth in the new poll.
Robert Morris jumped from 10th to sixth by beating Monmouth 20-17. Monmouth fell from fifth to 10th with the loss.
Stony Brook advanced from ninth to seventh after an impressive 48-20 win against Bucknell.
Duquesne had the week off and stayed at No. 8, while Iona entered the poll at No. 9 with a 17-14 overtime victory against Wagner. Sacred Heart narrowly missed the Top-10 by seven points after smashing La Salle 54-14.
Davidson's 33-30 loss to Wingate proved costly as the Wildcats tumbled from sixth to 12th in points. Morehead State and Butler also received votes.
The Sports Network FCS Mid-Major Top 10 poll includes the 20 programs of the MAAC, NEC, and Pioneer Leagues, which play at a non-scholarship or limited scholarship level. An updated poll, which is based on the votes of selected media members and FCS mid-major Sports Information Directors, is announced each Monday during the regular season.
