Baton Rouge, LA - Keiland Williams had a pair of touchdowns as second-ranked LSU destroyed ninth-ranked Virginia Tech, 48-7, at Tiger Stadium.
Williams finished with 126 yards on just seven carries while Jacob Hester finished with 81 yards on 12 carries with a touchdown for the Tigers (2-0), who have scored 93 points in their first two contests. Matt Flynn went 17- for-27 for 217 yards and a rushing touchdown.
'We recognized we played a very quality opponent and we played well,' said LSU coach Les Miles. 'We had no turnovers and our defense played really well from start to finish. Our offense paid attention to detail and executed.'
Tyrod Taylor went 7-for-18 for 62 yards and added nine rushes for 44 yards and the only touchdown for the Hokies (1-1), who beat the Tigers in the only other meeting with the team in 2002 in Blacksburg.
'I give all the credit to LSU,' said Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer. 'What a good football team. They really took it to us and played extremely well. They didn't make mistakes or turn the ball over. We are certainly disappointed in how we played, but I think you can probably give LSU a lot of credit for that.'
It was the greatest margin of defeat for Virginia Tech since 1982.
The game had a total of 747 yards in offense, 598 of which came from LSU.
The Tigers wasted no time taking the lead as they marched their first possession 97 yards down the field in 11 plays and capped it off with a three- yard touchdown run from Hester. The drive was highlighted on a 28-yard reception from Hester.
After forcing the Hokies to a three-and-out, LSU doubled its lead as Matt Flynn ran the ball into the end zone from seven yards out with 5:54 left in the first. The big play of the drive was a 56-yard reception from Brandon LaFell.
Later in the first quarter, Craig Steitz intercepted a Sean Glennon pass. Four plays later, Colt David hit a 30-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter for a 17-0 lead.
After stopping Virginia Tech on its next possession, Williams took the ball on the first play of the drive 67 yards into the end zone for a 24-0 lead.
That was the score heading into the locker room and LSU increased its lead in the third quarter on a 27-yard field goal from David for a 27-0 advantage 6:30 in.
The Hokies finally got their offense on track on their next possession. Taylor did most of the work as he had a 23-yard rush, followed that with a 19-yard pass to Branden Ore and capped the nine-play, 63-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run to make it a 27-7 game with 4:38 left in the third.
However, LSU answered on its next possession when Ryan Perrilloux hooked up with Early Doucet on a 34-yard touchdown for a 34-7 lead with 1:36 left in the third.
The Tigers scored twice more in the fourth quarter as Williams had a 32-yard rushing touchdown with 9:29 to play and Terrance Toliver hauled in a 28-yard pass in the end zone with 3:18 left.
