Freshman Locker leads Washington past Boise State

Seattle, WA - Jake Locker threw for a touchdown and ran for another, as Washington defeated 22nd-ranked Boise State, 24-10, at Husky Stadium.Locker completed 13-of-25 passes for 193 yards with an interception and ran for a team-high 84 yards for Washington (2-0), which is perfect heading into next Saturday's game against Ohio State.Marcel Reece added four catches for 102 yards and a touchdown for the Huskies, who have won three straight dating back to last season.Ian Johnson was held to only 81 yards rushing for Boise State (1-1), which saw its nation's best winning streak end at 14 games. Johnson lost a fumble and quarterback Taylor Tharp was picked off three times, as the Broncos committed a total of four turnovers in suffering their first setback since falling to Boston College 27-21 on December 28, 2005 in the Holiday Bowl.'We had a lot of chances, we just could not capitalize on them,' said Boise state head coach Chris Petersen. 'Too many turnovers, too many penalties. Every time we got something going we had to bring it back. That's what happens when you play great teams like Washington. We had opportunities, but we had eight or nine penalties and turned the ball over with three interceptions and a fumble.'Tharp ended 29-of-47 passing for 285 yards and ran for a score.'I think our guys made plays,' said Washington head coach Tyrone Willingham. 'It's that old thing. They threw the ball down the field a couple of times and guys that have been playing without hands had hands. That's awful nice. Catching balls with nubs is not real nice. But our guys had hands. They showed up and made plays.'Washington came out of the gate and right away put seven points on the board. The Huskies took the game's opening possession 78 yards and on the 12th play of the drive Locker ran in from six yards out for a 7-0 lead.After exchanging possessions, Boise State's first miscue of the half led to another touchdown for the Huskies. Johnson lost a fumble at BSU's 41-yard-line and six plays later Rankin found Quintin Daniels for a 16-yard TD pass with 3:08 left in the opening quarter.The Broncos, however, capitalized on a Locker fumble near midfield with 1:54 left in the quarter, as just 30 seconds later Tharp burst in from one yard out. Tharp had hit Titus Young with a 43-yard pass play to bring the ball down to the one-yard-line one play earlier.After Washington's Ryan Perkins hit a 34-yard field goal just over three minutes into the second quarter to extend the lead to 10 points, the Washington defense again came up with a big play. This time, Greyson Gunheim picked off Tharp deep in Huskies territory, ending a possible scoring drive, and thanks to a 15-yard penalty on BSU, Washington took over at its own 36.Three plays later, Locker hooked up with Reece on a 58-yard TD pass for a 24-7 cushion.BSU's Kyle Brotzman did hit a 22-yard field goal late in the half, sending the game into halftime 24-10 in favor of Washington.In the second half both teams had trouble as mistakes ruled play. BSU turned the ball over on downs inside the 10-yard-line with near five minutes to play. Then with just under three minutes left, Tharp was picked at the two-yard- line.Game NotesWashington last started a season 2-0 in 2001 when it went 4-0 to begin the year...Willingham is now 9-16 as head coach of the program...This was the first time that the Huskies beat a ranked opponent since Nov. 22, 2003 when they downed then-eighth-ranked Washington State 27-19 at Husky Stadium.© 2007 The Sports Network
