Stafford leads No. 13 Georgia over Oklahoma State

Sep 2, 2007, 2:35 GMT

Athens, GA - Sophomore Matthew Stafford completed 18-of-24 passes for 234 yards with two touchdowns to lead 13th-ranked Georgia to a 35-14 victory over Oklahoma State in the season opener for both teams.

Thomas Brown rushed for 48 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Bulldogs (1-0), who scored 14 points in the second half while keeping Oklahoma State off the board.

Freshman tight end Bruce Figgins and Michael Moore each caught a touchdown pass in the victory.

'There were a lot of things we did well and a lot of things we have to learn from,' said Georgia head coach Mark Richt. 'The defense played solid, the offense did well, and we made some great adjustments at halftime. I'm very proud of the way the team played tonight. It was a great win for us, and hopefully we can build on that. It was exciting to see us play like that.'

Bobby Reid threw for 191 yards on 16-of-30 passing with a touchdown and interception for the Cowboys (0-1), who were in the contest in the first half, but couldn't put together much offense in the third and fourth quarters.

Adarius Bowman ended with four catches for 65 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

'We were looking forward to coming down here to find out about ourselves and we found out we are not ready for the big-time,' said Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy. 'I have a lot of respect for the Georgia coaches and players and the way they competed.'

The home team took the early lead after Brown rushed into the end zone from 14 yards out just a minute into the contest.

Oklahoma State responded with 8:45 remaining in the opening quarter after Reid threw a 20-yard touchdown pass over the middle of the end zone to Bowman to tie things at 7-7.

With just 19 seconds left in the first quarter, the Bulldogs grabbed the lead after Brannan Southerland powered his way across the goal line from two yards out.

Georgia opened the second quarter with Brown's second touchdown of the contest, a three-yard score, to up its lead 21-7.

The Cowboys pulled to within a touchdown with 5:43 left in the first half as Danrtell Savage scampered into the end zone from five yards out to end an 11- play, 75-yard drive.

The Bulldogs regained their two-touchdown advantage after Stafford completed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Figgins with 9:43 to play in the third quarter.

For the remainder of the third, Georgia's defense took over as they didn't allow Oklahoma State a chance to get back into the contest.

The Bulldogs made it 35-14 with 11:11 left in the final quarter after Moore hauled in a nine-yard touchdown pass over the middle of the end zone.
