OFFENSE: Usually an offensive powerhouse, the Rockets stumbled last season and it was largely due to the inconsistent play at quarterback. Both Clint Cochran and Aaron Opelt struggled and heading into this new campaign, the sophomore Opelt has a slight edge at earning the starting spot. Opelt has a strong arm, but he is also a threat to run the ball. Hopefully the passing game will step up this season, but if it sputters again the offense will once again rely heavily on running back Jalen Parmele. Parmele is coming off a terrific season in which he rushed for 1,131 yards and eight scores. Expect to see Richard Davis and DuJuan Collins get some carries throughout the season as well, giving Parmele a breather.
DEFENSE: Toledo's defensive play last season was a bit of a mystery. The team only allowed 333.1 total ypg, but surrendered 27.7 ppg. The unit should be much better this time around, starting up front where a slew of experience returns. Sean Williamson is definitely the anchor of the line and will be joined by impressive sophomores Skylaar Constant and Douglas Westbrook. While the line is steady, the linebacking corps is the heart and soul of the unit. Greg Hay is simply one of the best LBs in the conference, especially in pursuit. Along with Keith Forestal and Eric Heller this is one of the more formidable lineups the MAC has to offer. Strong safety Barry Church is coming off an incredible season in which he claimed a spot on the All-MAC First Team as a freshman. Nigel Morris returns as a shutdown corner, while Walter Atkins will be placed on the other side of the field.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Kick Alex Steigerwald will rarely have the pressure of a tough field goal, so he will basically concentrate on extra points and kick-offs. Brett Kern is a consistent punter and he averaged more than 40 yards per punt a year ago. Last season, Parmele did some work as the club's return man, but considering how important he is to the success of the offense, look for a different player to shag punts and kick-offs.
OUTLOOK: There is plenty of depth and talent on the Toledo roster, but the biggest question is at quarterback. The Rockets use a spread offense and without a capable gunslinger the system will not work. Unfortunately, the Rockets do not have a grace period as the team opens the season with four really tough games as they will battle Purdue, Central Michigan, Kansas and Iowa State in succession. If the team can battle through that part of the schedule with at least one victory, expect the Rockets to contend for another MAC West title.
