New Orleans, LA - Chris Scelfo, who had just 18 conference wins in his eight seasons as head football coach of Tulane, was fired from his post Tuesday night.
Scelfo posted an overall record of 37-57 and a Conference USA mark of 18-44 during his tenure at Tulane which spanned eight seasons (1998-2006). He concluded the 2006 campaign with a 4-8 record. That included a 2-6 record in C-USA games.
The Green Wave have not qualified for a bowl game in four consecutive seasons, but more importantly, within the last year the team had to deal with the after effects of Hurricane Katrina. They played 11 games in as many cities that season and finished with a 2-9 record.
'Chris Scelfo and his staff have made many positive contributions to the Tulane University football program and I want to thank them for those efforts,' Tulane president Scott Cowen said. 'During the last 18 months, Coach Scelfo and his staff have guided Green Wave football through a series of events never before encountered by a university football team. Their contributions and perseverance through this trying time are deeply appreciated.'
This past season, Scelfo became the school's career leader for games coached with 94. He ranks second among Tulane's all-time coaches for victories and is the only Green Wave coach with two bowl victories after guiding Tulane to victories in the 1998 Liberty Bowl and the 2002 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.
Scelfo became the 36th head coach in school history on December 7, 1998, and less than a month later he led the Green Wave to a victory over BYU in the Liberty Bowl to finish Tulane's perfect 12-0 season.
