Akron, OH - University of Akron head football coach J.D. Brookhart has signed a new five-year contract with the school.
Brookhart, who will now be under contract through the 2010 football season, led Akron in 2005 to its first-ever Mid-American Conference title and first bowl game.
'We (the University) are thrilled to sign J.D. to a new five-year contract,' said Mack Rhoades, director of athletics . 'J.D. has done a tremendous job leading our football program both on and off the field in his two-plus years as head coach. He has demonstrated great compassion for our student-athletes and their well being athletically, academically and socially.'
The 41-year-old Brookhart, who is in this third year as head coach of the Zips, originally signed a five-year deal when the university hired him in 2003.
During his two-plus seasons at Akron, Brookhart has led the team to a 17-16 record. The Zips are 4-5 this season with a 2-3 conference record.
