OFFENSE: One of the biggest reasons for the Knights' turnaround in 2005 was their offense which ranked 40th in the nation, averaging 401.3 ypg.
The biggest improvement the offense saw was its ground attack which went from averaging just 97.0 ypg in '04 to 167.1 ypg in '05. Kevin Smith was a big reason for the improved ground game, as he rushed for 1,232 yards and nine touchdowns in becoming the C-USA Freshman of the Year. Smith isn't the only weapon in the UCF arsenal, as quarterback Steven Moffett can also make plays. Moffett is coming off his best season, throwing for 2,925 yards with 22 touchdowns against only nine interceptions.
Although Moffett lost his primary target in Brandon Marshall, UCF does welcome back an equally as talented Mike Walker. The senior wideout provided a nice complement to Marshall last season and posted 64 catches for 855 yards and nine touchdowns. All five starters are back along the offensive line.
DEFENSE: On the defensive side of the ball is where UCF had some issues last season, ranking 96th in the nation in total defense (420.5 ypg). However, with 10 starters back from that unit and a year of experience under their belts, the Golden Knights should have no problem improving.
Up front, UCF returns three of four starters, although the team is still in search of a legitimate pass rusher. Chris Welsh highlights the trio and will be asked to produce more than his two sacks from a year ago.
In the middle of the field, the Knights lack experience, although three starters do return. Of the team's top six linebackers, five are either sophomores or freshmen. As for the secondary, it is talented but young, as four sophomores claim starting roles. Cornerback Joe Burnett had moments of brilliance last season and led the team with five interceptions as a freshman. Free safety Jason Venson also put forth a stellar rookie campaign as he led the club with 85 tackles, including 66 solo efforts.
SPECIAL TEAMS: The Knights lost last year's Hawaii Bowl on an extra point so finding the right kicker won't be taken lightly this season. A couple of transfers in Michael Torres and Nick Beucher will compete for the field goal kicking duties. Aaron Horne will once again handle the punting chores after averaging a solid 42.2 ypp last season.
OUTLOOK: The Golden Knights were able to sneak up on everyone last season and won despite fielding a young and inexperienced team. UCF won't be taken so lightly this time around, but then again, this year's team is more experienced and much more confident. The Knights have the weapons and experience to not only compete for a second straight bowl appearance but for the league title as well.
