Woods to miss US Open
Jun 7, 2011, 21:09 GMT
Berlin - Former world number one golfer Tiger Woods said on Tuesday that he would miss this year's US Open because of an injury.
Woods, who has won the US Open three times and 14 majors in total, is chasing Jack Nicklaus' total of 18 major wins.
Since his personal life was dragged through the mud in the media at the end of 2009, Woods has been hampered by injury and his last victory in a major dates back to the 2008 US Open.
He finished tied fourth at the Masters earlier this year.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Woods said that he is extremely disappointed to miss the US Open. 'But it is time for me to listen to my doctors and focus on the future.
'I was hopeful that I could play, but if I did, I risk further damage to my left leg. My knee and Achilles tendon are not fully healed. I hope to be ready for AT&T National, the next two majors and the rest of the year,' he said.
Woods picked up his latest injury while hitting a ball during the Masters and as a result had to withdraw from the Wells Fargo Championship and pulled out of the Players Championship in May after playing just nine weeks.
'It's been a frustrating year, but I am committed to my long-term health. I will be back playing when I can,' he said.
The US Open will be played at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda in Maryland June 16-19.
