World Number One Donald named European Tour Golfer of the Month

Jun 4, 2011, 7:39 GMT

Berlin - World Number One Luke Donald has been named the European Tour Golfer of the Month for May after winning the BMW PGA Championship in Wentworth last weekend.

Britain's Donald, who moved to the top of the world rankings with his play-off victory over compatriot and former number one Lee Westwood, shot an opening round 64 and then led from start to finish to win the 750,000 euro (1 million dollars) first prize.

His other results in May were a tied fourth place finish in the Players Championship on the US PGA Tour and runner-up in the Volvo World Match Play Championship.

The win in Wentworth on the weekend was his second tournament victory this year after taking the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in February.

He also leads The Race to Dubai with earnings of 2,581,495 euros.

It is the second time that Donald, 33, has been named golfer of the month and he joins other winners: Martin Kaymer (January), Paul Lawrie (March) and Charl Schwartzel (April) as a finalist for the European Tour Golfer of the Year Award.
