Ryder Cup 2018 host country to be announced in May
Feb 9, 2011, 11:18 GMT
Berlin - The host country of the 2018 Ryder Cup will be announced in May this year, the European Tour said on Wednesday.
France, Germany, Holland, Portugal and Spain have submitted bids to host the biennial competition which sees the best European golfers take on their American counterparts.
In a statement the European Tour said that the winning nation would be announced at the Wentworth Club on May 17.
The Ryder Cup director Richard Hills said that the evaluation process had lasted 18 months.
'On May 17, we will be able to announce one gold medallist and four silver medallists.
'All five could have hosted the 2018 Ryder Cup, based on the detail and quality of their bids, and although one country will be successful, we look forward to continuing our close relationships with each one of those five countries in the future,' he said.
Europe last year won the competition after beating the US 14.5 to 13.5 in the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales.
The next competition will be held at the Medinah Country Club, Medinah, Illinois in 2012, while Scotland will host the competition in 2014.
