Kuchar leads after first round is completed
Aug 13, 2010, 18:21 GMT
Sheboygan, Wisconsin - American Matt Kuchar took a one-shot lead at the PGA Championship on Friday as the first round was completed.
Heavy fog on Thursday caused a lengthy delay to the start of the championship and resulted in many of the late starters not finishing their rounds.
The 32-year-old Kuchar, who missed the cut in his two previous appearances at the PGA Championship, was one of five players who finished the day on four-under on the Whistling Straits course in Kohler, Wisconsin on Thursday.
Kucher managed one par in his final four holes of the first round on Friday morning and then birdied the second hole to lead by two from a group of five, who were on four-four under.
Of those, however, only Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, who was two-under for the day after birding the first two holes, was already on the course.
Korean Seung Yul Noh, Italian Francesco Molinari, American Bubba Watson and South African Ernie Els were to tee of later.
Tiger Woods, who came into the tournament off a disastrous 18-over and second-last place in the Bridgestone Invitational last weekend, will start his second round one-under on 71, while Phil Mickelson, is on 73.
The left-handed Mickelson could take over the number one ranking from Woods if he wins the PGA Championship or finishes in the top four well ahead of Woods.
