American Watney sets early clubhouse target on final day
Apr 11, 2010, 22:40 GMT
Augusta, Georgia - Unheralded American Nick Watney set the early clubhouse lead midway through the final round of the US Masters after a brilliant 7-under-par 65 on Sunday.
Watney carded eight birdies and just one bogey in his round as he moved from 1-under-par overnight to 8-under-par at the end of his round.
With seven holes to play, two-time champion Phil Mickelson was tied for the lead on 12-under through 11 holes with Korea's KJ Choi, with Englishman Lee Westwood and American Anthony Kim level on 11-under.
Watney was miles off the pace when he began his round but quickly set about changing that with birdies at the second and third.
A bogey at the fifth dropped him back but he then picked up three straight birdies to turn in 32, 4-under-par.
Birdies at the two par-fives on the back nine, the 13th and 15th, took him to 7-under-par and he then picked up another one at the 17th to end on 8-under.
Fred Couples was one ahead of Watney on 9-under through 14, while Tiger Woods was level with Watney, also with four holes of his final round still to play.
