Turnberry, Scotland - Tom Watson and Stewart Cink must take on each other in a four-hole play-off for the 138th British Open Sunday after both players finished on 2-under after their final. rounds at Turnberry.
Watson, 59, finished with a 72 after missing a six metre putt on the last for par to win the Claret Jug and become the oldest major champion in golf history, and now faces a battle over holes 5, 6, 17 and 18 if he is to secure a sixth Open crown.
Fellow American Cink, meanwhile, sank a long-range putt for birdie on 18 to card a 69 to take one step closer to a first major.
Lee Westwood missed out on his chance of victory after bogeying three of the last four holes, although the Englishman also narrowly missed sinking an eagle on 17 that would have seen him go to the final hole as clear leader on 3-under.
Instead, Westwood bogeyed the last to miss out on a play-off place.
'I played pretty well again and got myself into a great position,' said Westwood. 'I'm feeling fairly low now after three-putting the last.'
Compatriot Chris Wood also dropped a shot at the last to finish at 1-under. Wood went out in 32 thanks to an eagle at the seventh and birdy on eight but two further birdies on the back nine were cancelled out by three bogeys as the 21-year-old finished with a 67.
Compatriot Luke Donald finished one shot further back after also shooting a round of 67 while Ernie Els carded a 68 to sit amongst a group of three players to finish on 1-over par.
The South African missed an opportunity to set a tougher target on the Scottish links course when bogeying the last and instead had to be satisfied with finishing level with Denmark's Soren Hansen, who shot a 67.
Justin Leonard also carded 1-over after a round of 68 that included six birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4 16th hole.
Italian teenager Matteo Manassero secured the silver medal awarded to the leading amateur after the 16-year-old ended with a round of 69 for a total of 2-over.
