Bad back causes Choi to withdraw at Deutsche Bank

Norton, MA - K.J. Choi, second on the FedEx Cup Playoff points race, withdrew from the Deutsche Bank Championship on Friday, citing a back injury.Choi, who finished second to Steve Stricker last week at The Barclays, shot a two-over 73, then withdrew.'Back in March at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, he sustained an injury in his lower back,' said Choi's agent, Michael Yim. 'He wasn't playing when it happened. He was actually picking up one of his children from the bathroom one night and he pulled a muscle in his lower back.'After he teed off today, on one of the first two holes, he felt the pain again in his lower back. The pain wasn't severe, but he didn't want to force it. He didn't want to play when he wasn't physically at his best. I was there walking with him. He wasn't hitting the driver well and you could see he was struggling.'A two-time winner this season, Choi vaulted to second on the Playoff points race based on his runner-up finish last week in the first-ever FedEx Cup Playoff event.Despite the withdrawal, Choi still stands a great chance to make the Tour Championship in two weeks. The field gets reduced to the top 70 on the Playoff points race next week at the BMW Championship and Choi would be guaranteed a spot in that field.'He will definitely play the next two weeks,' said Yim, who confirmed that Choi received treatment, then flew back home to Houston. 'He just needs the time off now. He wants to put himself in the best condition for Chicago and The Tour Championship.'© 2007 The Sports Network
