Wang leads Canadian Tour Championship

Toronto, ON - Eric Wang fired a seven-under-par 65 on Thursday to take the first-round lead of the Canadian Tour Championship.James Love posted a six-under 66 to take second place at National Pines Golf Club. Bret Guetz is alone in third place after an opening round of five-under- par 67.Wang started at the 10th tee on Thursday and struggled to go to one-over through three holes. He made up four shots over his next six holes to make the turn at minus-one.At the par-three sixth, Wang hit his tee ball to tap-in range. He ran home an eight-foot eagle putt at the par-five ninth to take sole possession of the first-round lead.'I didn't hit a fairway until five and was fighting everything the first few holes,' said Wang. 'I really didn't get comfortable all day. I just started to try and keep things simple. All of a sudden, I got some putts to fall.'This is the final week for the Canadian Tour and money leader Spencer Levin has all but wrapped up that title, despite a two-over-par 74 in Thursday's first round.The second spot on the Order of Merit, which brings with it an exemption into the second stage of the PGA Tour's National Qualifying Tournament, is still up for grabs.Derek Gillespie, third on the Canadian Tour money list, shot a four-under 68 and is tied with several players for fourth place.Byron Smith is second on the money list and defeated Gillespie last week to win the Jane Rogers Championship. He shot a three-under 69, but was assessed a two-shot penalty for an incorrect drop that gave him a 71 for the opening round.© 2007 The Sports Network
