There have been nine international champions at Westchester and they have combined to win 13 of the 40 titles. Singh won for the third time last year, while Sergio Garcia is a two-time winner and has four top-five finishes in seven starts here.
Westchester has hosted all 40 previous playings, but has played to three different pars -- 70, 71 and 72. Since 1983, the course has played to a par of 71.
With the FedEx Cup series, the top 144 players on the points list qualified for this event, but only 138 players will tee it up. Those who qualified had their points reset with No. 1 Tiger Woods starting with 100,000 points and No. 144 Jeff Gove beginning the playoffs with 84,700.
Six players -- Tiger Woods, Bernhard Langer, Stephen Ames, Jose Maria Olazabal, Jason Bohn and Ryan Palmer -- are the skipping the first event for various reasons.
With the field cut to 120 players for next week's Deutsche Bank Championship, that means Bohn (No. 126) and Palmer (No. 133) will not advance in the playoff series.
For the first three playoff series events -- Barclays, Deutsche Bank Championship and BMW Championship -- points are awarded on a sliding scale. Winners of the first three events earn 9,000 points, while the 70th place finisher picks up 100 points.
The winner of the Tour championship, the final of the four playoff events, will collect 10,300 points. The winner of the FedEx Cup playoffs will be awarded $10 million towards his retirement fund.
The Golf Channel has three hours of coverage the first two days, before CBS takes over on the weekend starting at 3:00 p.m. (et) Saturday and 2:00 p.m. Sunday. Next week's event is the Deutsche Bank Championship, which Tiger Woods won last year.
EUROPEAN TOUR
KLM OPEN, Kennemer Golf and Country Club, Zandvoort, Netherlands - With many of the top players in the world in the United States this week for the first event in the FedEx Cup playoffs, Simon Dyson hopes to do something only one other player has done so far this year.
Dyson birdied the first playoff hole last year to defeat Richard Green and claim his second title of the '06 season. So far in 2007, the only player to repeat as champion on the European Tour's International schedule has been World No. 1 Tiger Woods, who has repeated at three events.
Bernhard Langer hopes to return to action this week, alongside his son Stefan, at this event. The elder Langer has been out of action recently due to a hospital stay to remove kidney stones. Bernhard Langer is a three-time winner here.
This tournament is one of the oldest on continental Europe, dating back to 1912. Last year's playoff was just the fourth since 1972.
Coverage begins all four days on the Golf Channel at 9:00 a.m. (et). Next week is the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, where Paul Casey won last year.
LPGA TOUR
SAFEWAY CLASSIC, Columbia Edgewater Country Club, Portland, Oregon - After three straight events outside the United States, the LPGA returns to the States for the Safeway Classic.
Pat Hurst held off a trio of players last year to collect her fifth LPGA Tour title. Hurst carded three rounds in the 60s and her closing 68 helped her move past the four second-round co-leaders.
The Columbia Edgewater Country Club is hosting this 54-hole event for the 17th straight year and 24th time overall.
In 2002, Annika Sorenstam set all kinds of scoring records en route to her first win here. She opened with a 10-under 62 to set the 18-hole mark, then went on to establish the 36-hole (131) and 54-hole (199) records.
ESPN2 has two hours of coverage on all three days of the tournament. The LPGA moves to Illinois next week for the State Farm Classic, where Sorenstam won last year.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
BOEING CLASSIC, TPC Snoqualmie Ridge, Snoqualmie, Washington - The Champions Tour remains on the West Coast this week for the Boeing Classic, which last year was known as the Boeing Greater Seattle Classic.
Keith Fergus closed with a 64 to force a playoff with Tom Kite, but it was Kite who walked away with the title.
Kite got up and down for birdie on the first playoff hole to defeat Fergus. In regulation, Kite had a chance to win, but he missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th green.
This is just the third year of the event.
The Golf Channel broadcasts action all three days starting at 6:30 p.m. (et) each night. The Champions Tour ends a three-week run on the West Coast next week with the Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, where Scott Simpson won last year.
NATIONWIDE TOUR
NATIONAL MINING ASSOCIATION PETE DYE CLASSIC, Pete Dye Golf Club, Bridgeport, West Virginia - Ending with a playoff last year, Jason Enloe fended off Boo Weekley for the title here.
Enloe parred the first extra hole for his first win on tour. He was helped by a four-stroke swing in the final three holes.
Weekley led by four after both players birdied No. 15. Enloe went on to birdie 16 and 18, while Weekley bogeyed the same two holes to force the extra session.
This the fourth year of the tournament and it has been contested each year at the Pete Dye Golf Club.
The Golf Channel has two hours of coverage the first two days and three hours of action on Saturday and Sunday. Next week is the Utah EnergySolutions Championship, where Craig Kanada won last year.
CANADIAN TOUR
JANE ROGERS CHAMPIONSHIP OF MISSISSAUGA, Lakeview Golf Club - Mississauga, Ontario - This new event, the Jane Rogers Championship of Mississauga, will serve as the final event before the Canadian Tour Championship.
The event was named for Jane Rogers, who, while battling cancer, raised funds for her cancer clinic. Landmark Sport Group is donating all of the event management services so that all proceeds from the event can go to the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada and the Trillium Hospital's Oncology Unit.
The final event of the 2007 season, the Canadian Tour Championship, is next week. Stuart Anderson won that title last year.
UNITED STATES GOLF ASSOCIATION
U.S. AMATEUR, The Olympic Club, San Francisco, California - The 2007 U.S. Amateur tees it up this week. The starting field of 312 players will be cut to 64 after 36 holes of stroke play.
The match-play portion is slated to commence on Wednesday with the 36-hole final on Sunday at the Olympic Club. The Lakeside and Ocean Courses will host the two rounds of stroke play, before the match play portion is contested on the Lakeside Course.
This will be the ninth USGA Championship contested at the Olympic Club, which is also scheduled to host the 2012 U.S. Open.
There are 11 past USGA champions in the field including Cory Whitsett, who won the U.S. Junior Amateur earlier this year; Mike Bell, the '06 Senior Amateur winner; and Casey Watabu, last year's U.S. Public Links champ.
The Golf Channel with cover action the first three days before NBC broadcasts action over the weekend. The next USGA events on the schedule are the Senior Amateur and Senior Women's Amateur, which will be played September 1-6.
DURAMED FUTURES TOUR
THE GETTYSBURG CHAMPIONSHIP, The Links At Gettysburg, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania - The penultimate event on the Duramed Futures Tour schedule will be this week with The Gettysburg Championship.
Song-Hee Kim, who is on the LPGA Tour this year, won for the fifth time during the '06 season. Kim got up and down for par on the second playoff to beat Jin Young Pak.
The final event of the season is next week with the ILOVENY Championship, that Ji Min Jeong won last year.
