Tiger to design course in North Carolina mountains

Asheville, NC - Tiger Woods, fresh off his PGA Championship victory Sunday, announced he will design his first American golf course, at The Cliffs at High Carolina.The world's No. 1 golfer announced his plans on his Web site.'My goal is to design a handful of very unique courses around the world, and The Cliffs is a perfect fit for my first American design,' Woods said. 'Seeing what they've created with some of the world's best designers is very inspiring, and I'm looking forward to adding my own style into the mix.'Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains, The Cliffs is located in a corridor connecting Asheville, North Carolina to Greenville, South Carolina. It also features 14 state parks, three national forests, and one national park.'When I got to the top of the mountain and looked across those meadows I knew this would be the site of my first American design,' Woods said. 'I hope this will become one of the most talked about views in the country.'Woods' design will bring The Cliffs' lineup of championship courses to eight. Two Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses are among those at The Cliffs. According to Nicklaus' Web site, his company, Nicklaus Design, has over 300 golf courses currently open for play.© 2007 The Sports Network
