Woods, Isleworth team shut out at Tavistock Cup
Mar 26, 2007, 21:20 GMT
Orlando, FL - It's not every day that you get to beat Tiger Woods, so players tend to enjoy the few occasions it does happen.
Even somewhere like the Tavistock Cup.
Playing for the Lake Nona team, Chris DiMarco and Henrik Stenson defeated the Isleworth duo of Woods and John Cook with a 15-under 57 Monday on the first day of the annual yuck-fest between members of two of the world's top golf clubs.
DiMarco and Stenson picked up two points for their win, and Lake Nona took a 10-0 overall lead with wins in each of the five matches.
Woods arrived and departed Lake Nona by helicopter, one day after he won his 13th World Golf Championships title at the CA Championship. The victory netted Woods $1.35 million, bringing his career earnings over the $68 million mark.
On Monday, he and Cook combined for a seven-under 65 to lose by eight shots.
'It's nice when you get him shaking his head, because usually he's got us shaking our heads,' DiMarco said.
Woods earned medalist honors in Isleworth's five-point victory last year, which brought the team's overall record to 2-0-1 since the Tavistock Cup began in 2004.
He and Cook struggled to keep pace with DiMarco and Stenson on the front nine, shooting a 35 to fall seven back around the turn. They had a 30 on the back nine, but it wasn't close to being enough.
Woods did get his highlight.
He creamed a three-wood off the tee at the par-four 14th and knocked it within six feet to set up an eagle, one of only three eagles for either team in the match.
In a group of four seasoned pros, the shot could only have come from Woods.
'You just never know when he's going to run off seven or eight birdies in a row,' DiMarco said.
In the fourball format, the duo with the lowest 18-hole better-ball score wins the match and earns two points for its team. One point is awarded to each side for a tie.
In the day's other matches, Lake Nona got wins from Justin Rose and Ian Poulter over Robert Allenby and Craig Parry; Retief Goosen and Trevor Immelman over Stuart Appleby and Nick O'Hern; Graeme McDowell and Ben Curtis over Lee Janzen and Scott Hoch; and Ernie Els and Mark McNulty over Mark O'Meara and Charles Howell III.
'I guess the guys got fed up with losing and really came out to play,' said Els, the Lake Nona captain.
Isleworth's captain agreed.
'Right now it's all blue, and that's not pretty,' O'Meara said, pointing toward the scoreboard. 'We've taken them to the bank in the past, and I think they're just pissed off.'
