PGA Tour, Tiger Woods Foundation combine for D.C. stop

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL - The PGA Tour and Tiger Woods Foundation announced on Tuesday that the tour will come back to the Washington D.C. area this summer, thanks to the two organizations signing a long-term deal.

The new event will be played July 5-8 with the Tiger Woods Foundation serving as the tournament's host and primary charitable beneficiary. The title sponsor, purse and course will be announced at a March 7th press conference.

'This is a wonderful opportunity to expand awareness and interest in the work we're doing for millions of kids across the country,' said Woods. 'I'm grateful the PGA Tour selected us as partners and am very excited my Foundation will host another amazing event, this time in our nation's capital. I'm delighted to think of all the young people this will help us reach.'

This will mark the second PGA Tour event affiliated with Woods' organization. The Tiger Woods Foundation is the chief charitable partner for the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston. The new event in Washington has an even stronger relationship with the Tiger Woods Foundation and that probably means Woods will be a fixture.

He has never missed a Deutsche Bank Championship since its inception in 2003, including a victory last year.

This new event will replace The International on the PGA Tour's schedule as the tournament in Colorado folded when it was announced it could not find a title sponsor.

The Washington D.C. area was in need of a new tournament after the Booz Allen Classic did not return to the docket in 2007.

'After an extensive search, we are very excited about our partnership with the Tiger Woods Foundation to bring a PGA Tour event back to our nation's capital over the 4th of July holiday celebration,' said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem.
