Vettel equals F1 pole record with Abu Dhabi qualifying win
Nov 12, 2011, 14:09 GMT
Abu Dhabi - World champion Sebastian Vettel equalled Nigel Mansell's record 14 pole positions in a Formula One season when he dominated qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Saturday.
Vettel clocked 1 minute 38.481 seconds on the 5.554km Yas Marina Circuit to match Mansell's achievement from the 1992 campaign and give Red Bull 17 season poles from 18 sessions.
Lewis Hamilton was second for McLaren in 1:38.622 and his team-mate Jenson Button third on 1:38.631.
Vettel can raise the record to 15 in a fortnight at the season-ending Brazilian race, and by winning the final two races would also match Michael Schumacher's record 14 season victories from 2004.
Vettel assured himself of back-to-back titles last month and has amassed 374 points. The race for second place remains open between Button (240), Fernando Alonso (227), Mark Webber (221) and Hamilton (202).
