LEAD: Rosberg extends contract with Mercedes

Abu Dhabi - Nico Rosberg has extended his contract with Mercedes, the Formula One team said Thursday in Abu Dhabi.

The German driver has agreed 'a multi-year contract extension to include the 2013 season and beyond,' the team said.

Rosberg, 26, is in his second season with Mercedes after joining from Williams to partner seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.

He has achieved three podium finishes with the team and five in all in 106 races, but is still looking for his first Grand Prix victory.

The contract deal comes ahead of this Sunday's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Rosberg goes into the race seventh in the world championship standings, five points ahead of Schumacher.

Mercedes said in a statement the team 'will enjoy stability in its driver line-up for a third consecutive season.'

Rosberg's performances have 'demonstrated that he belongs to the top group of drivers currently racing in Formula One,' it said.

Team principal Ross Brawn said Rosberg had achieved results 'at the very limit of the technical capabilities of our current car.'

He added: 'He has an excellent work ethic and, together with Michael, this gives us a driver pairing who consistently push the team to improve and progress.

'As we continue to strengthen our team for the future, we look forward to providing Nico with a car which will enable him to compete right at the front of the field and achieve his deserved first win in Formula One.'

Rosberg said he was 'very excited' to have extended his contract.

'To win in a Silver Arrow will be one of the highlights of my life so far, and I greatly enjoy helping to lead our team in our quest to become the best in Formula One,' he said.
