PREVIEW: Red Bull set sights in constructors' title, and 2012
By Christian Hollmann Oct 13, 2011, 8:47 GMT
Yeongam, South Korea - Freshly crowned world champion Sebastian Vettel aims to help his Red Bull team clinch the constructors title on Sunday at the Korean Grand Prix while the team is also starting to look ahead at 2012.
'We have these four races (left in the season) to learn a lot. We have a certain degree of freedom to explore things and to make sure that we will come back even stronger next year,' Vettel said.
Vettel, 24, won his first world title in 2010 in the final race of the season but has been the dominant force this time around from the outset. He clinched back-to-back titles on Sunday by finishing third at the Japanese GP.
Vettel, who has finished every race this season and placed no worse than fourth, tops the bill with 324 points from McLaren driver Jenson Button (210) and Fernando Alonso of Ferrari (202).
In the constructors' list, Red Bull has 518 points to McLaren's 388 and the 292 of out-of-contention Ferrari. Another solid result from Vettel and Mark Webber will give the England-based Austrian team the second title of the season.
'The drivers' title was the first part, now we want to keep the constructors' title as well,' said team principal Christian Horner. 'This is almost more important within the team, it is about prestige in the pit lane.'
Red Bull are showing no signs of taking it easy on the home stretch of the season.
Some already fear a hegemony such as Michael Schumacher's dominance at Ferrari with five of his seven world titles 2000-2004. Vettel has remained cautious about whether he can attack Schumacher's records over the next years but also named winning an addiction and urged the team on to keep delivering.
'You should stay at home if you are not motivated anymore. We make our own pressure,' Vettel said. 'We must continue to work very hard and keep our feet on the ground.'
McLaren have only a remote chance of getting the first constructors' title since 1998, but at least want decent results from Sunday's winner Button and Lewis Hamilton.
'We've lost none of our ambition to win now that the drivers' championship has been resolved, and I know both our drivers would dearly love to score a one-two for McLaren to further proof that we have a superbly competitive car at the moment,' said team principal Martin Whitmarsh.
Alonso and Ferrari also aim to end the season on a positive note, with the two-time world champion Alonso saying: 'We are still competitive. So why shouldn't we be driving for victory in the remaining races.'
The action in Yeongam starts with two practice sessions on Friday, qualifying is Saturday and the 55-lap race on the 5,615-kilometres course on Sunday.
