Schumacher demoted one place, Kobayashi moves up grid
Oct 8, 2011, 11:36 GMT
Suzuka, Japan - Michael Schumacher was demoted one place to eighth behind Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi following Saturday's qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix.
Neither the German nor the Japanese set a time in the third qualifying, but stewards said Kobayashi did start a qualifying lap which he then aborted.
Kobayashi, originally classified 10th, moves to seventh ahead of seven-time world champion Schumacher in a Mercedes who did not manage to start a lap in Q3.
Renault drivers Bruno Senna and Vitaly Petrov, who both also did not set a time in Q3, both drop one place to ninth and 10th respectively.
Under F1 regulations, drivers who attempt to set a time by starting a flying lap are classified first among those who don't record a time.
They are followed by drivers who leave their garage but don't start a flying lap and then drivers who stay in their garage.
