Alonso says this season has been too easy for Vettel
Sep 23, 2011, 10:30 GMT
Singapore - World champion Sebastian Vettel is poised to wrap up back-to-back titles in Sunday's night race in Singapore after a dominant Formula One season, but 2012 will be a different story for the German Red Bull driver, said Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.
'I think this year has been too easy for him,' Singapore's Today newspaper on Friday quoted the Spaniard as saying.
Alonso, who is second in the driver's standing with 112 points adrift of Vettel ahead of six remaining races, still has a mathematical chance to snatch the title from the German, but said he did not believe he could succeed.
'Unfortunately, this year is nearly gone, and the championship will be in Red Bull's hands,' said the 30-year-old.
'I expect more competition next year among Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull,' he said. 'Hopefully, we'll be very close and can fight for the championship.'
Alonso is aiming for a third triumph in Sunday's night race on Singapore's bumpy Marina Bay Street Circuit and hopes to delay Vettel's coronation.
'In the six remaining races, we don't want to go there and race for second place,' the newspaper quoted the Spaniard as saying. 'We will try to win every single race knowing it will be very difficult.'
Alonso would have to win at least four of the remaining races and pick up 13 points from the others to win a third world championship.
In addition, Vettel would have also have to finish outside the points in all races.
