Paris - Robert Kubica will take the place of Ferrari-bound Fernando Alonso in the Renault Formula One team next year, it was announced on Wednesday.
Renault said in a statement that the Polish driver Kubica 'will drive for the team from the 2010 season onwards.'
Kubica, 24, comes from BMW-Sauber, with BMW ending its F1 engagement after the 2009 season.
Kubica is the first Polish driver in the sport he joined in 2006. He has competed in 55 races with one pole, one win (2008 in Canada) and eight podium finishes overall. He came fourth in the 2008 championship.
'I feel I have a special connection with this team because in 2005 I won the World Series by Renault. This gave me the chance to test with the team in Barcelona, which led to my debut in Formula One,' said Kubica.
Team boss Bob Bell said: 'We are very excited to have signed Robert with the Renault F1 team starting next season.
'Ever since Robert made his Grand Prix debut in 2006, he has been on our radar as one of the most naturally talented drivers of his generation and he has delivered on that promise so it9s great to have secured him in one of our cars next season.'
Alonso won the 2005 and 2006 world title in a Renault. It was announced last week that the Spaniard will move on to Ferrari next season, taking the place of ex-champ Kimi Raikkonen.
The other Renault driver is currently Romain Grosjean of France.
