Massa leaves Budapest clinic for Brazil return
Aug 3, 2009, 8:28 GMT
Budapest - Felipe Massa left a Budapest hospital on Monday as he returned to his native Brazil to recover from severe head injuries sustained in qualifying for the Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix on July 25.
The departure was confirmed by the Hungarian defence ministry, which oversees the AEK military hospital where Massa underwent treatment.
Massa, 28, was taken in an ambulance to Ferihegy airport for the flight in a private plane to Sao Paulo. He is due to spend a few more days in hospital there before going home for further rehabilitation.
The Brazilian driver underwent surgery for multiple skull fractures when he hit a tyre wall after being hit by a spring from a another car which was lying on the Hungaroring track.
It remains unclear when the 2008 championship runner-up Massa will be able to race again.
Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher of Germany will come out of retirement to take Massa's place in the next races, starting with the European Grand Prix on August 23 in Valencia, Spain.
