Jul 31, 2008, 13:44 GMT
Budapest - Heikki Kovalainen will continue to drive for McLaren-Mercedes in 2009 after the Formula One team confirmed Thursday that it had extended the Finn's contract by a year.
The announcement was made in Budapest ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, ending speculation that Williams-Toyota driver Nico Rosberg might be on his way to McLaren at the end of the season.
'We are delighted to continue working with Heikki and are convinced that soon he won't only take pole like he did recently at Silverstone but that he will achieve a similar placing in a race,' Mercedes motorsport director Norbert Haug told Deutsche Presse- Agentur dpa.
Kovalainen, 26, joined McLaren this season as a replacement for Fernando Alonso. He currently lies in sixth spot in the overall standings with 28 points after 10 of 18 races.
