Hamilton has full team support despite Canadian disaster
Jun 17, 2008, 13:23 GMT
Stuttgart - Lewis Hamilton has the full support of his Mclaren-Mercedes team despite a costly rookie mistake at the Canadian Formula One Grand Prix.
'He has the full sport and he will continue to have it,' said Mercedes motorsport chief Norbert Haug on Tuesday.
However, Haug also said that the Briton Hamilton was rightly criticised for the incident at the Canadian Grand Prix on June 8.
Hamilton crashed into the Ferrari of world champion Kimi Raikkonen when he overlooked a red light at the pit lane exit.
The incident forced his retirement from the race he was leading at the time, and he was also docked 10 positions on the starting grid for the next race on Sunday in France, which effectively makes victory there impossible.
Hamilton lost the championships lead and currently ranks joint second with Ferrari's Felipe Massa on 38 points behind new leader Robert Kubica (42 points), who got his first win for BMW in Canada.
Haug said that McLaren has accepted the penalty for Hamilton although the Magny-Cours race will now be a 'tough test.'
But Haug also said that Hamilton 'required no special motivation pill' ahead of the eighth season race.
