Indianapolis, Indiana - Defending champion Fernando Alonso showed in Friday's first free practise for Sunday's US Grand Prix that he is taking the challenge to team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
The British rookie driver leads the championship standings with 48 points from Alonso, who has eight less, but on Friday it was the Spaniard who led the way in the first practise session.
Alonso posted a time of one minute 11.925 seconds for the 4,192 kilometre-long course, beating Hamilton by .703 seconds. German BMW- Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld, who finished second in last Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix, managed to place himself between the two with a time of 1:12.391.
His team-mate Sebastian Vettel, who will become the fifth-youngest Grand Prix driver on Sunday as he takes over the ride of BMW-Sauber's Robert Kubica, had the fourth-fastest time.
Kubica was on Thursday told by FIA medical officers that he could not drive after the horrific crash in which he was involved during the Canadian Grand Prix.
The two Ferrari's disappointed once again as Kimi Raikkonen finished fifth, 1,041 seconds behind the pace, while Felipe Massa was seventh-fastest.
