Monte Carlo - Defending world champion Fernando Alonso pipped McLaren-Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Lewis Hamilton to pole position for the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix Saturday thanks to a stunning final qualifying lap.

Alonso clocked a time of 1 minute 15.726 seconds on the narrow street circuit in Monte Carlo to take the 16th pole of his career, finishing 0.179 seconds ahead of Hamilton.

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, who has won the last two races in Bahrain and Spain, will start from third on the grid after clocking a time of 1:15.967 minutes for the lap of 3.340 kilometres.

Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella was fourth fastest with Nico Rosberg in a Williams fifth and Red Bull's Mark Webber sixth.

Nick Heidfeld of BMW-Sauber was seventh ahead of team-mate Robert Kubica.

Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari suffered steering damage after seemingly clipping a barrier during the second qualifying section and will start from 15th on the grid.

Hamilton currently leads the drivers' standings with 30 points from four of 17 races, followed by Alonso on 28 and Massa on 27 points.
