Schumacher, Alonso put off by heavy rain in Japan
Oct 6, 2006, 5:27 GMT
Suzuka - Heavy rain at Friday's opening practice at the Japanese Grand Prix stopped Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso from taking part in the test run for their cars.
Seven-time title winner Schumacher and defending champion Alonso let test drivers do the laps on the 5.807 kilometre-long course.
Honda's Briton Anthony Davidson did 18 laps of his team's home circuit with a best time of one minute 45.349 seconds. Toro Rosso's Swiss reserve Neel Jani was second, 0.789 seconds slower, with BMW Sauber's German teenager Sebastian Vettel third.
Another practice session is scheduled for later Friday and Saturday morning, with qualifying on Saturday ahead of Sunday's 53-lap Grand Prix.
Schumacher, who will retire after the season, could wrap up his eighth world title if he wins Sunday and Alonso drops out or finishes scoreless. Otherwise the title will be decided in Brazil on October 22.
