BMW dominate final French practice
Jul 15, 2006, 13:18 GMT
Magny-Cours, France - BMW dominated the last practice session for the French Formula One Grand Prix from Jacques Villeneuve and Nick Heidfeld while Michael Schumacher's Ferrari almost went up in flames.
Villeneuve clocked 1 minute 17.005 seconds for the 4.411- kilometres lap, Heidfeld had 1:17.049 and Jarno Trulli was third in 1:17.056.
Schumacher clocked 1:18.241 but the session was over for him when the Ferrari seemingly overheated and the pit crew needed to stop a fire with a fire extinguisher.
Technical director Ross Brawn said an engine change, which would drop Schumacher 10 positions on the starting grid, was probably not necessary ahead of the qualifying session later Saturday.
World Fhampion fernando Alonso revealed nothing in a Renault as he used only old tyres to clock 1:18.447 minutes.
Alonso leads the championship with 88 points from Schumacher who has 69. Sunday's race is the 11th of 18 season events.
