Vancouver, BC - Joe Smith rushed 20 times for 161 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the B.C. Lions pounded the Montreal Alouettes, 46-14, snapping a three-game winless streak in the process.
Smith broke the 100-yard mark by halftime, carrying 13 times for 130 yards and two second quarter scores. His backup, Ian Smart, totaled 10 carries for 63 yards and a pair of touchdowns of his own.
Lions quarterback Jarious Jackson, in his second start of the season, completed 8-of-18 passes for 145 yards. He was intercepted once. Jackson's main target was Paris Jackson, who had three receptions for 46 yards.
Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo finished 15-of-25 for 151 yards and two touchdowns, but was intercepted once and sacked six times.
Jarrett Payton led a lackluster Alouettes rushing attack, carrying eight times for 29 yards.
Ben Cahoon hauled in five passes for 67 yards, and Elijah Thurmon caught five for 52 yards.
The loss snapped a four-game Alouettes win streak.
Montreal broke the scoreless tie early in the second quarter when they capitalized on an interception with a 28-yard connection from Calvillo to Cahoon for a 7-0 lead.
B.C. got on the board with a 23-yard field goal from Paul McCallum with 8:25 remaining in the second.
The Lions then mounted a pair of scoring drives resulting in Smith rushing touchdowns to take a 17-7 lead heading into the locker room at halftime. Smith scored from 15 yards out with just over two minutes left in the half, then rumbled in from four yards with 21 seconds remaining.
B.C. added a safety with 12:24 left in the third quarter, and got another McCallum field goal to extend the lead to 22-7.
Calvillo was in the midst of leading Montreal on a lengthy drive during the third quarter when Ryan Phillips jumped a crossing route and took it back 87 yards to the house for a potentially backbreaking score.
But the Alouettes responded by marching downfield again, this time coming up with something to show for it - a five-yard touchdown pass from Calvillo to Ashlan Davis with six seconds remaining in the third.
Ian Smart scampered in from nine yards out with just under 12 minutes to play, and B.C. had a 36-14 lead. Another long Lions drive was culminated in another Smart touchdown run with seven minutes to play, this one from 13 yards out.
McCallum added another field goal, a 26-yarder, to complete the scoring.
